Protest and Performance: Navigating Free Speech and Representation in Campus Arts
Project type
multimedia journalism project
Date
October 2023
Location
Los Angeles, California
As part of The Corsair team, I contributed to our coverage of a significant student protest against a controversial play staged on campus. The play ignited passionate debates about representation, cultural sensitivity, and the ethics of artistic expression. Students organized protests to express their concerns over the play’s portrayal of marginalized communities, raising critical questions about the balance between freedom of speech and the potential harm caused by misrepresentation in the arts.
This project was particularly inspiring because it highlighted the essential role of journalism in amplifying diverse voices while addressing sensitive and complex issues. I was motivated to ensure that both sides of the debate—the students protesting and the play’s supporters—were accurately and thoughtfully represented. Our coverage included in-depth interviews, context on the play’s background, and a platform for readers to understand the broader social implications of the protest.
As part of a collaborative effort, I worked closely with the editorial team to create well-researched articles and multimedia elements, including interviews and footage of the protests. Our shared commitment to balanced and factual reporting helped us capture the gravity of the situation while upholding journalistic integrity.
This experience reinforced the idea that journalism not only informs but also fosters dialogue within the community. Being part of this project was a valuable lesson in navigating the intersection of free expression and respect for the lived experiences of those affected.
